On Wednesday the 13th June a good number of the DCRO team
carried out a search and rescue scenario in the Dewerstone
area. Michael Rose (Devon & Cornwall Police POLSA) helped
to make the training more realistic and he also gave us
a thorough debrief.
The 18 man team was divided into four groups who were
given area to search. These were Shaugh Mine, Crags,
River Plym & River Meavy and all findings were reported
and treated as evidence.
After an hour a body was found high in the crags,
it appeared as if the body had been murdered and the
area was cordoned off.
In debrief the following points were raised:
Always overlap sectors in a search
Police have their unique terms e.g. POD = Percentage of Detection
GPS is very useful in plotting findings in the field or at base
Helicopter searches are very limited in woodland with only a 2% POD
DCRO Radio etiquette needs improvement
To increase POD use ‘critical spacing’ and ‘purposeful wondering’
The distance between searchers depends on the size of the object you are looking for
ID cards are very useful when searching common or private land
We learnt radio battery life is unpredictable
