Devon Cave Rescue Organisation (DCRO) has been in existence since 1965, It is formed
from local cavers who are willing to voluntarily assist others who may be
lost or injured in the caves or mines in Devon. The rescue team has
approximately 48 members, based throughout Devon, Somerset and Cornwall.
The team have two rescue stores, the main one is in Buckfastleigh with a second
subsidiary store in Plymouth. These stores hold a variety of equipment; First
Aid kits, Stretchers, Rope Access Gear, Hauling Equipment, Surface Radios, Underground
radios and telephones, Warm air re-breathing equipment, Bolting equipment,
Casualty evacuation bags, etc.
DCRO are called to an incident via a member of the public making a
999 call to the Police, the Police in turn call or page the controller or one
of the key wardens, who contacts the original caller and assesses the incident and calls out the team.
DCRO can also be called to assist other teams, in particular
Dartmoor Rescue Group, Mendip Rescue Organisation, South Wales Cave Rescue
Organisation, Cornwall Rescue Group and Cornwall Mines Rescue Group.

The Mountain Rescue Council of England and Wales is the national co-ordinating
body for the regional members together with the British Cave
Rescue Council and the Search and Rescue Dog Associations.
It is a voluntary body and a registered charity. Its main function is to
liase on behalf of the teams with the various government departments in the
running of mountain and cave rescue and to arrange such items as the provision
of communications, stretchers and first aid equipment, and the provision of
accident insurance for team members when they are training or operational.
