SCHOOL TRIP WOMAN RESCUED FROM CAVE
A woman who injured her back while assisting a school
caving trip has been brought to the surface by rescuers.
She was hurt during a trip inside the one kilometre-long
(0.6 mile) Pridhamsleigh Cavern near Ashburton, which
has a reputation for being muddy.
Devon Cave Rescue Organisation (DCRO) controller John
Whiteley said at the scene that just before 4pm the
casualty was brought out of the cave.
"She is conscious and talkative and in a reasonably
good state," he said.
The DCRO and the emergency services were called to
the Cavern - rated as a novice-type cave - around 12.20pm
The woman, understood to be 19 years old, is believed
to have fallen around 10 feet while assisting a school
party on a trip from Kingsbridge, south Devon.
A spokesman for the DCRO told the BBC the caves were
regularly used for caving activities and were known to
be safe. He said the school party had been caving with
a qualified instructor when the woman slipped.
